It is the title of a Theosophical work published by Philip Greenlees in 1949. Confusion may have stemmed from similarity with the Shepherd of Hermas, a text of the 2nd century AD. Reference- Greenlees, Duncan, 1949. "A Brief Hermetic Catechism" in The Gospel of Hermes, Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, Madras, India. 1949.
